May 9, 2011: Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace & Bullet for My Valentine

Monday night marked my last show working for the UCF Arena in Orlando and it was a doozy. Members of Bullet for My Valentine whipped their hair back and forth, Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace rocked his best power stance, and at least two guys from Avenged Sevenfold appeared as though they stepped right out of “The Lost Boys,” all before a nearly sold-out show.

Perhaps the most striking part of the night was the way in which one actor descended into view of the crowd: by the “neck” (actually by cables and a harness). Did it make any sense? No, but the crowd seemed to the enjoy the morbidity of a feigned hanging.

Ludacris, LMFAO & Corey Smith – October 16, 2010

LMFAO saturated the stage, photo pit, and crowd with champagne and Coronas. Above is a dripping speaker just before Ludacris, the closing act, came on.

UCF’s annual Homecoming concert rolled through last weekend and, as usual, it was amazing. There was not a single open space on the standing-room-only floor. LMFAO’s performance utterly blew me away with their energy and choreographed moves, and their use of live instruments to back up their vocals certainly didn’t hurt, either.

Carnival of Madness Follow-Up

At last, I was able to sit down and go through my shots of Sevendust and Puddle of Mudd from the July show. Between searching for a new place to live, planning a trip to Amsterdam (which will get a post all of its own in days to come), applying to Peace Corps, moving into my new home, watching my boyfriend graduate and helping him prepare for his move to Miami, photos without a deadline unfortunately had to take a back seat.

After all these years, there is no doubt in my mind that Sevendust still has it. PoM’s Wes Scantlin sent several bottles of liquids over the photo pit into the crowd (thus spilling crap all over my gear), and although they put on a decent set, he lost major points with me that night.

Robin Williams at the UCF Arena

Robin Williams warms up the crowd on his Weapons of Self Destruction tour in Orlando, Fla. Oct. 23, 2009.

Having the opportunity to photograph Robin Williams last week was a dream come true. His outrageously flamboyant and at times somber characters have permeated American culture to its very core. His roles as Peter Pan, Patch Adams, Genie in Aladdin, Armand Goldman in The Birdcage, and the Moon King in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen are only a very limited few of my favorites. Even though I was only allotted 4 minutes to shoot, his energy and command of the stage made it obvious that he healed wonderfully from his heart surgery, which had postponed the concert originally slated for March.

Tiesto at the UCF Arena, Oct 16, 2009

Tiesto took Orlando by storm last night via a whopping four-hour set. It. Was. Epic!
